Abstract

10% phenylephrine and 1% tropicamide solutions are topically applied to 100 Koreans, followed by intermittant measurement of the pupil size in order to observe the mydriatic and cycloplegic effects of the solutions.
The following results are obtained:
1 1% tropicamide solution had more potent mydriatic effect on younger age group while 10% phenylephrine solution was more effective on older age group.
2. The cycloplegic effect of 1% tropicamide was not satisfactory.
3. The size of pupil before the topical administration did not correlate with the degree of postapplication mydriasis.
4. The administration 1% pilocarpine solution brought about the shortened recovery time from mydriasis.
